Little Steps, Big Aspirations For All

Class 11 and The Great Fire of London 1666

This half term, we  have been learning about what it would have been like to live during the Great Fire of London.  First we researched The Great Fire of London and learnt lots of information about it, including when and where it started, and what happened after the fire.

We thought about why the fire spread so quickly and used our understanding of adjectives to describe the streets when the houses were on fire.  In Science we set up fair tests to investigate what a fire needs to keep burning and what it needs to spread.

We have been learning about the construction of Tudor houses.  First we looked closely at the materials used to build them and then we looked at how they were made.  We also compared the difference between materials of Tudor houses and modern day houses.  We learnt that they were very cold! Finally, we loved creating our own Tudor houses.

When the houses were nice and dry we made our own Columbia Street, with the houses packed nice and tightly together. Before starting the fire, we all estimated how long it would take for all the houses to burn to the ground. The houses were set alight and amazingly took less than 5 minutes to burn.

Great fun!
