Little Steps, Big Aspirations For All

Recycling week

To celebrate recycle week Class 1 played on purple mash recycle game (Finding pairs).  We also classify metal and paper using interactive game.  We talked about how to look after the Earth, we then decorated some biscuits using blue and green food colouring.  Parents sent in some recycle materials and we made a school bus interlinking it with our topic ‘back to school’.

Class 2 used old school clothes to make pictures of themselves for our display board and loved using recycled washing up bottles as squirters in the water tray.

In Class 6 some of us have been sorting through what we can recycle and what we can’t in ICT.  Others have been doing gross and fine motor skill work placing flour into bottles and containers we have recycled.

Class 7 had fun with junk modelling, making models out of boxes and bottles.

Recycling week in class 8 was very busy. On Monday we went to Whitburn beach and using litter pickers and plastic gloves we did a litter pick on the beach. We found lots of things that shouldn’t be there like cans, plastic bottles and a baby's dummy! In art we up-cycled plastic bottles to make halloween lanterns using different coloured paints and sticky eyes.  We sorted rubbish in class and found the correct bin to put the items in.   On the discovery park we made an up-cycled band and called ourselves ‘The Recycle Men’ and recorded a song.  On the discovery park we collected elderberries and mashed them up with water to make a natural dye. We also used turmeric and blackberries, wrapping elastic bands around old T-shirts in different ways then added the natural dyes to make fabulous up-cycled new T-shirts. WOW didn’t we do a lot.

Class 9 have been working on cleaning up after themselves, putting their rubbish in the bin and putting paper and cardboard into the recycling bins.

The children in Class 10 listened to the story ‘The Messy Magpie’. In the story the magpie collected other people's rubbish that had been thrown away. However, he soon realised that his home had become a mess. The story helped the children to talk about why we need to keep places clean and how we can recycle. In the end we played a game where we pretended to be the magpie in the story and sorted and recycled litter that had been thrown on the ground. Unfortunately the battery on our camera went off so we didn’t get any photographs!

Class 11 - Collecting and sorting rubbish -We started our Recycling week by collecting rubbish from the different outdoor areas to collect rubbish. We talked about what it was made of and sorted into different recycling bins. Upcycling wellies - We put holes in the bottom of old wellies for drainage and then half filled the wellies with soil. Then we put our rosemary plant in the wellington and filled the spaces with soil. Making faces from natural materials - We talked about the different features on our faces and drew a large face shape on our card. Once we had done this we went outside and collected various natural materials to use as features on our face.

Class 12 sorted the recycling into metal, plastic and cardboard.  We then use the plastic bottles to make plant pots for our outdoor area. We planted viola's into soil and hung the pots on our fence, they look amazing.
